IfStranger Thingshad come out back in the '80s,Too Naughty to Say No (1985) - Remastered it would've been on the tail end of the Bronze Age of Comics. Which would have been a fitting spot for them to debut.
I wanted to see what it would look like if the, now iconic, kids first appeared on the covers of comic books. And so I drew just that.
The Bronze Age had staple superheroes but with more realistic, darker and socially relevant stories -- much like the show itself. As the series progressed, it would have overlapped into the Modern Age of Comics, which, like the Bronze Age, dealt with darker themes but were also more psychological.
For the first cover I wanted to harken back to Star Wars #1 with an establishing shot of the kids in the woods. It lets you know these are the heroes of the comic, and it's going to be all about them.
In this second cover, I wanted to reference The Incredible Hulk #180's cover and its dynamic posing. A lot of comic book covers during that time had similar posing with the main character in the foreground and the villain in the back. Also, Barb had to at least make one of the covers. She deserved better than being just a filler character.
And for the last cover of those rascal teenagers I used Vampirella #113 with those classic hands reaching out toward the heroes with a point of view from the monster. In my version our heroes are better equipped to fight back.
Just as Stranger Thingswas an homage '80s films, comics and culture, it also translates insanely well to a comic book format.
