In late August last year,Bad Detective: Food Chain [Uncut] at the IFA trade show in Berlin, Acer showed me a pretty insane gaming laptop, with a hinge that enables you to angle its screen or even turn it away from you.
Back then, the Triton 900 was behind a glass and not all of its specs were known, but now, at the CES show in Las Vegas, Acer has revealed all the details, including the (hefty) price.
SEE ALSO: 7 of the best laptop brands of 2019The general idea hasn't changed. The Triton 900 has a CNC-machined hinge that lets you move the device's 17.3-inch touchscreen more freely than you'd be able on a conventional laptop. Acer mentions four basic modes of operation: traditional notebook mode, Stand mode which turns the Triton 900 into a tablet of sorts, Display mode which shares the screen with others, and Ezel mode for playing games on the touch screen. Note the trackpad, which is placed next to the keyboard; this, Acer claims, should provide a more natural hand placement during gaming sessions. The entire thing is, surprisingly, quite thin at 0.94 inches.
The specs are strong: An Intel Core i7-8750H processor, 16/32GB of RAM, 1TB SSD, and an Nvidia RTX2080 graphics card with 8GB of RAM. The screen has a 4K resolution and supports G-Sync.
All of this doesn't come cheap: The Predator Triton 900 is coming to North America in March, and starts at $3,999.
On Sunday, Acer also announced the far more conventional Predator Triton 500. It's a powerful gaming laptop with a 15.6-inch screen whose top variant has the same specs as the Triton 900. You can also get a slightly cheaper variant with 16GB of RAM, 512GB of SSD storage, a 6GB RTX2060 graphics card and no G-Sync. There's also a mid-range variant with 16GB of RAM, a 512GB SSD, an 8GB RTX2080 and G-Sync on board.
Design-wise, The Triton 500 looks a lot like its bigger brother but without the hinge and with the trackpad positioned conventionally, below the keyboard, it's basically an ordinary, yet powerful laptop.
It will come to North America's stores in February starting at $1,799.
