If there's one thing the Marvel Cinematic Universe is The Sex Files A Dark XXX Parodygood at, it's giving its audience more. The whole interconnected franchise runs on the prospect of the next movie or TV show, giving us more heroes, more sequels, more plot twists and Easter eggs — to the point MCU fans have understandably come to expect the next appearance of a hero before he or she has even had a chance to finish their first. Such is the case with the Disney+ show Moon Knight, a six-episode show starring Oscar Isaac as Marc Spector/Steven Grant that has played the possibility of a sequel series very close to the chest.
Of the six Marvel Disney+ TV shows aired, only two have been confirmed to have a second season in the works. Those are What If…?, which as an animated show has a lower lift in terms of securing actor availability, andLoki, which like Moon Knightwas billed as a limited series before Marvel announced Season 2 on the day of the show's Season 1 finale. However, LokiSeason 1 ended on a cliffhanger that all but required a continuation of the story; how Moon Knight Season 1 will end remains to be seen, and Season 2 may not happen for a number of reasons.
Moon Knightis one of the newer MCU projects that breaks the studio's previous mold for contracting actors for multi-movie deals. Oscar Isaac, who has had experience with Disney-owned mega franchises due to his three-movie role in Star Wars, did not sign a contract that required his character to show up in a defined quantity of future MCU projects. He's only on the hook for the six episodes of Moon Knight's first season, after which Disney will have to re-contract with him for every movie or TV show in which Moon Knight may possibly appear.
SEE ALSO: 'Moon Knight' review: Oscar Isaac is the MCU's new secret weapon SEE ALSO: 'Moon Knight's' end credits may hint at a huge finale twistThat process of re-contracting doesn't mean that Oscar Isaac won'treturn for a second season of Moon Knight, just that he has a right to accept or turn down later appearances of his character — something few MCU stars have had the power to enforce before now. That's a win for actors who don't want to be locked into massive contracts just for the honor of playing a superhero, but it also means that speculating on the future arcs of new characters like Marc Spector/Steven Grant is futile without more information.
For what it's worth,Moon Knight is also the first MCU Disney+ series that stars a hero that has not previously appeared in Marvel movies. Where characters like Hawkeye, Loki, Wanda Maximoff, and Sam Wilson have already had their "origin stories" on film, Moon Knightthe seriesis Marc Spector's origin story. Once we know what happens to him in the show, it may not be necessary to have another season, as the character may simply move on to appearing in films now that we know what his deal is.
The Marvel Studios Twitter account deleted a tweet that states Episode 6 was the "series finale" of Moon Knight and replaced it with one that referred to Episode 6 as the "season finale." It could be a hint that Season 2 is still on the table, or it could be keeping the possibility open just in case.
So will there be a Moon KnightSeason 2? Possibly, but it's not yet contracted and it may be redundant depending on how Season 1 ends and how Marc Spector fits in with the mainline MCU in later movies. Good thing MCU fans are used to waiting a while for answers, right? Right?
