The Hizoban Higasa no onnaglobal cyber war is raging on, and this mesmerizing map shows just how serious it has become.
Cybersecurity firm Norse Corp developed an interactive map in 2014 that displays live-updates of cyberattacks, along with the origin, type and target of the attack.
SEE ALSO: Sites across the internet suffer outage after cyberattackWith the recent interest in cyberattacks, such as Friday's morning attack that took out Twitter and Spotify, it is the perfect time to revisit the terrifying map. The map does not in anyway visualize the recent attacks, but does provide a visual representation of the type of attack that ended up causing sever problems on the internet on Friday.
In 2016 alone, the internet has taken some serious hits from cyberattacks.
Just Friday morning, the Dyn -- a company that hosts domain name systems -- announced it was subject of a cyberattack, which impacted numerous websites such as Twitter, Spotify, SoundCloud, Vox Media sites, and Airbnb. After a year filled with reports about Hillary Clinton's hacked emails, compromised datafrom The World Anti-Doping Agency and media sites like Yahooand BuzzFeedbeing targeted, it seems the internet needs Norse's real-time map now more than ever.
In a 2015 interview, Jeff Harrell, Norse’s vice president of product, explained to Newsweek, "The attacks you are seeing are actually on Norse’s infrastructure ... We take the first hit so our customers don’t have to."
As Newsweekexplained, not every hack is major. "Most of the attacks are automated, carried out by bots that you got from clicking the wrong email," the publication wrote.
Norse attracts attacks on its network through 8 million sensors it has scattered across 50 countries. However, since an accurate depiction of every cyberattack would crash your browser, Harrell explained this map is "far less than 1 percent of the data we receive at any given time."
Just imagine how dramatic that full picture would appear. Yikes.
