In a witty and typically irreverent statement, Onion Studio's vice president Kyle Ryan said, "We've plotted our takeover of the film industry for some time. With the help of Serious Business and Lionsgate, we'll make room on our award shelf for some Oscars. To the basement you go, Pulitzers."
One of the tapped producers tweeted in the style of an Onion article about the deal.

Lionsgate will manage distribution of the films through 2018 and help with promotion.
The Onion was purchased by Univision last year.
