Chris Hemsworth's Netflix franchise run isn't close to ending,Girlfriend Who is Crazy About Big Things (2025) as Netflix greenlights a third installment of the Marvel star's mercenary action franchise, Extraction.
Announced by Hemsworth and the film's director Sam Hargrave at Netflix's Tudum fan event on Jun 17 — just one day after the streaming release of Extraction 2 — the third movie is sure to follow up with even more stunts and killing from main character Tyler Rake (Chris Hemsworth).
SEE ALSO: 'The Flash' review: It sucksThe first Extraction, based on the graphic novel “Ciudad” by Ande Parks, premiered in 2020 and was Netflix's biggest movie opening at the time. The adaptation's team also included the Russo brothers, with Joe Russo returning to helm the sequel.
Extraction 2 followed three years later, picking back up with assumed-to-be-dead Rake once again saving innocent lives and killing people who get in the way, all part of the Russo brothers' desire for an Extractioncinematic universe.
While many action fans applauded the eye-catching stunts and action-packed plot of the earlier film, others regarded the sequel as a failed attempt at something more.
"Extraction 2has too much going on for it to be half-watched, but it’s never compelling enough to merit your full attention, ultimately making it a perfect Netflix original film and a mediocre one by any other measure," wrote critic Kimber Myers in Mashable's sequel review. "Rake’s character is less developed than his biceps; he’s simply a gruff dude with a sad past who kills a lot of people. There’s nothing wrong with making an ultra-violent shoot ‘em up that’s just about the action, but Extraction 2tries — and fails — to find greater meaning in all the mayhem."
With the second film offering an ending that could pose just as many problems as the first, how Extraction 3intends to continue Rake's story is yet to be seen. Will it finally lean into the true Hemsworth charm rather than relying on a John Wick-esque emotional drive? Or does it matter at all, with Netflix's action arm churning out movie after movie to apparent streaming success?
Extractionand Extraction 2are currently available on Netflix.
